Theodore F. Engel Jr. Obituary
Theodore F. "Ted" Engel Jr., DMD, age 98, of Rockport, MA passed away peacefully at his home on May 9, 2024, of natural causes. Born in Oklahoma City, OK on July 20, 1925, he was the son of the late Theodore F. Engel, Sr., and Helene C. (Solms) Engel.
Ted grew up in Queens, NY and Newton, MA. He is a graduate of Newton High School Class of 1943, Boston University and Tufts School of Dental Medicine Class of 1951. Ted served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II as a Flight Engineer. He also served a second time in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the Dental Service Corp.
After his military service he lived in Needham, MA with his family and practiced general dentistry for 41 years in his own practice. After spending many summers in Rockport, he ended up retiring there.
Ted loved carpentry and building ship models. He was an avid skier and sailor. His favorite ski area was Stowe Vermont. Ted was a longtime member of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport where he was Commodore from 1971 to 1972. He was also a member of the International Star Class and raced in Star boats for 50 years. Ted enjoyed teaching and wanted to pass his knowledge of sailing and dentistry on to future generations. He taught sailing with great patience to adults at Sandy Bay for many years. After selling his dental practice in 1992 he went on to teach dentistry in the dental clinic at Boston University School of Dental Medicine for 25 years (until the age of 93) where he attained the position of Clinical Assistant Professor.
Ted is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth W. Engel. He is survived by his children, Steven Engel and his wife Anne, Beverly LaCombe and her husband Gerald, Bruce Engel, and his wife Maria; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Engel and her husband Arthur, Theodore Engel II and his wife Laura, Heather LaCombe, Evan LaCombe and his fiancee, Alex Kerney; and his great-grandchildren, Marion Dembro, Lucille Dembro, Taylor Engel and Torrey Engel.
A Memorial Service will be held at The First Congregational Church in Rockport, MA on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 11:30 AM. A reception will follow the service. There are no visiting hours, and the burial will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Sandy Bay Yacht Club Sailing Program and Scholarship Fund Inc. or Tufts School of Dental Medicine.
