Nina Walker Obituary

Nina (Groves, McLatchy) Walker of Rockport passed away in the comfort of her home on Monday, February 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was eighty years old.

How do you sum up a full and complex life in a few paragraphs?Nina was born and raised in Gloucester where she spent her childhood causing trouble around Rocky Neck and East Gloucester. She attended Gloucester High School and graduated in 1962 and until very recently, she still enjoyed attending lunches and reminiscing with those cherished friends from her youth.

After graduating from Northeastern University she moved to Woburn, MA to raise a family and in 1982 she met and married the love of her life, Ed Walker. Together they blended a large, raucous family. Managing many personalities through the teenage and young adult years while also working and obtaining a Master's degree from Harvard, was not always easy but the closeness and love that the family has for each other is a testament to her resolve.

Although Nina lived the majority of her adult life in Woburn, she yearned to be near the ocean. Because of that draw towards the northshore she purchased an old, dilapidated house on Conomo Point in Essex in 1978. It was there that she was her most content. When she wasn't sitting in her chair in the corner of the porch ready to impart some piece of wisdom she could often be found visiting on Marion's swing or the Lane's porch. She worked tirelessly to ensure that Conomo Pt could be enjoyed by future generations and played an integral role preserving leaseholder rights at Conomo.

After becoming an empty nester in the 1990's Nina started her second career working as a Field Project Manager for the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. She became a certified workaholic working from her home long before the rest of the world learned what that was. She ended her distinguished career when she retired to Rockport with hopes of spending time with friends, family and getting closer to her Gloucester roots.

Nina is preceded in death by her loving husband Edwin Walker. She is survived by and dearly missed by her children Alison Bryer, Eliza Lucas, Beth King, Barbara Cloonan, Brenda Scaramozzino and Edwin Walker Jr; sons in law Steve Bryer, Fabio Lima, Kevin Kramich, Donald Cloonan, Phillip Scaramozzino, Scott Lucas and Bob King; daughter in law Tiffany Walker; and her cherished grandchildren Jacob, Abigail, Amelia, Caroline, Andrew and his wife Emily, Nicholas, Emily, Jill, Luke, Ali, Stanley and his wife Nicole and Nell; as well as dear family and friends.

Visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Sunday, March 23, 2025, from 10-11AM followed by a Memorial Service/Celebration of life, at 11AM. In Lieu of flowers contributions can be made in her name to Cape Ann Animal Aid or Shalin Liu Education Programs.
