Emily Conover Evarts Gordon Obituary

Emily Gordon of Rockport passed away peacefully on January 17th surrounded by loved ones.

She is survived by her five children; Richard Gordon of Pittsburgh PA, Elizabeth Gordon (Roger Lang deceased) of Cary NC, Jacques Gordon (Elizabeth Wiltshire) of Cambridge MA, Helen Gordon (Ronald Schlitz) of Falmouth MA, Charlotte Gordon (Mark Konecky) of Gloucester MA; 11 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her spouse of 55 years, Richard Gordon. Together, they raised their family in St. Louis, MO and then moved to Tempe, AZ when Richard joined the faculty of ASU.

Emily was born in Cambridge, MA and attended the Shady Hill and Buckingham Schools before earning a degree in Biology at Bryn Mawr College. She also earned a master's degree in microbiology from Harvard University. Later in her life, she went back to work in the neurobiology lab at Washington University in St. Louis. She was fond of sailing and tennis and participated in these sports for most of her life. Emily sailed the family O Boat, The Zora, with her sisters Mary and Sally as crew. A lifelong member of Sandy Bay Yacht Club, she also owned a Bullseye, The Lady Slipper.

Emily was beloved by neighbors and friends everywhere she lived. She was known for remembering important and sometimes obscure details of her friends lives and of their extended families. She was a Life Member of the Community School of Ladue MO. Emily was an active member for many years at St. Mary's Episcopal in Rockport, Church of the Epiphany in Tempe, AZ and Trinity Church in St. Louis, MO.

She will be remembered for her love of family, her kindness, her lifelong passion for reading, and her signature recipes. She was also an avid crossword puzzler and would play boardgames with her grandchildren for hours.

Services will be held on Tuesday, January 23, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 24 Broadway, Rockport at 11 am.
