He was predeceased by: his parents, Flora Smith (Young) and Edward J. Smith, Sr.; his mother-in-law Mary O'Donoghue (Walsh); and his brothers-in-law, Gerard F. and John J.
He is survived by: his wife Helen Smith (O'Donoghue) of Raynham; his son Kevin Michael Smith; his siblings, Paula Demming (late David) of Wilmington, Deborah Acton (James) of Pepperell and James Smith (Diane); and his siblings-in-law, Barbara O'Donoghue Jr. (Marino), Beverly O'Donoghue (Young), Robert and Jeanne O'Donoghue (Ouellette). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
