He was predeceased by: his wife Loretta E. McCarthy (Chaponis); his parents, Charles McCarthy and Anna McCarthy (Sweeney); and his brother Charles McCarthy. He is survived by: his children, Richard D. McCarthy of Paxton and Danielle E. McCarthy of Plainville; his grandchildren, Mariah, Courtney, Richard, Leila, Jameson and Chloe; and his siblings, Patricia Larkin, Joanne Burke, Eugene McCarthy, James McCarthy, John McCarthy, Kathleen Stout, Thomas McCarthy, Geraldine MacDonald, William McCarthy and Maureen Cray. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
