He was predeceased by: his daughters, Carol Lynn and Kim; and his sisters, Mary and Kathy. He is survived by: his parents, Herbert E. and Ethel M. Johnson (Whitmer); his wife Jean S. (LaForest); his children, Mark Russell (Carla Russell) of Monson, Terry Russell (Louie Picco) of Monson and Kevin Russell of Monson; and his brother Jim Smith. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Donations in Carl's memory may be made to a veterans' charity of one's choice.
