He was predeceased by: his brother Daniel McDonald; his siblings-in-law, Nancy McDonald, Grace Ann McDonald and Joseph Ballantine; and his parents, Captain Daniel T. and Margaret McDonald (Cleary).

He is survived by: his wife Patricia McDonald (Biache); his children, Richard M. McDonald, Jr. of Northborough, MA and Christine McDonald; his son-in-law William McCabe; his granddaughters, Mada and Fionnuala McCabe of Washington, DC; and his sisters, Pamela McDonald of Southborough, MA and Elaine Ballantine of Nashua, NH. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
