Rita D. Varao Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Rita D. Varao of New Bedford, Massachusetts, who passed away on November 5, 2020 at the age of 85. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

She was predeceased by: her parents, Manuel G. "Ted" and Blanche P. Souza; her son David G. Varao; and her brother Manuel G. Souza, III. She is survived by: her husband Gilbert M. Varao; her children, Dee Belliveau of New Bedford, Susan Broderick of Fairhaven and James R. Varao (Stephanie) of Tampa; her siblings, Joseph Souza (Stella) of Westport, Robert Souza of California, Richard Souza of Forestdale and Patricia L. Travers of Fairhaven; her grandchildren, Aimee Cabral (Michael) of New Bedford, Heather Souza of New Bedford, Matthew Broderick, Jr. of New Bedford, Justin Varao of Tampa, Florida and Sean Varao of Tampa, Florida; her great grandchildren, Zachary, Jenna, Kyle, Raymond, Layla, Lily and Avery; and her sisters, Blanche Machado and Maryann Souza. She is also survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Schwartz Center, 1 Posa Place, Dartmouth, MA 02747.

“Dave and I would like to express our sincere condolences on the passing of such a great woman. Rita will always live on in our memories at mt Carmel seniors and the many hours shared together at the buttonwood warming center during elections. She always brought sunshine and truth to a room. We are here should anything arise that you know we can help you with. God grant her eternal rest and may He grant you strength and faith to know she had reached the best because she was the best.”
