He was predeceased by: his parents, Americo J. Fernandes and Maria R. Fernandes (Garete); and his sister Ana Emelia G. Fernandes. He is survived by: his wife Aurora Fernandes of New Bedford; his children, José Antonio Fernandes (Elizabeth Oliveira) of New Bedford, Maria Isabel Santos (late James Santos) of New Bedford and Ilda Fernandes (David Martins) of New Bedford; his siblings, Joaquim Fernandes and Maria (Fernandes) of Jesus; and his grandchildren, Joshua Santos, Katherine Santos and Elias Santos.
