He was predeceased by: his parents, John Courtney and Eleanor Courtney; and his brother Thomas P. Courtney. He is survived by: his siblings, John J. Courtney III (Jennifer) of Dracut, Michael D. Courtney (Lana) of Lawrence, Patricia Courtney of Everett, Kathleen Carlson (Steven) of Malden, Linda Abele (Eric) of Tewskbury and Joseph Courtney (Debra) of Texas; and his niece Jamie Courtney of Everett. He is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.
