He was predeceased by: his wife Maureen K. O'Brien (O'Brien); his parents, William H. O'Brien and Louise O'Brien (Fone); his son James J. O'Brien Jr.; and his brothers, William O'Brien Jr. (Eileen) of Wakefield and Robert.

He is survived by: his son Robert D. O'Brien (Maria) of Woburn; his grandchildren, Courtney, Brendan and Jeremiah O'Brien; and his sister Louise O'Brien. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
