Mary Wynne Green Obituary
Mary Agnes Wynne Green shed the weight of her mortal skin on January 5th 2023 and danced her way onto her next adventure. She lived her life fully; with passion and an open heart, for nearly all of her 79 years. And while she left us with deep sadness, she also left us with a treasure trove of memories of laughter and all around good fun.
Those who knew Mary knew her as a woman who never shied away from new experiences (unless it was more than 10 feet high), from meeting a new person, to traveling to new places, or seeing the world through someone else's eyes.
She moved to Marshfield in 1970 and called it home. She loved to explore, hike, kayak, bicycle, and cross country ski in the moonlight. She planted many a fruitful garden. She was especially adept at building a fire, cooking dinner for 15 on a wood stove, and hosting parties where a good time was had by all.
She willingly embraced the interests of those she loved. She became a trophy winning candlepin bowler with her husband Bill; an accomplished fly fisherwoman with her love, Aldro, including bringing in a record 22-inch rainbow trout on the Rapid River in Maine. Alongside Andy she explored the outdoors and traveled, including trips to Denali National Park in Alaska, Yosemite, and the fall wine festivals of Germany. With Bob she enjoyed motorcycling and together they traveled to its three meccas; Laconia, Daytona, and Sturgis.
In her thirties she put herself through college, graduating at the top of her class at Massasoit Community College. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Northeastern University: the first in her family to earn a college degree. She worked for several decades in Boston including for the Central Artery/Tunnel Project AKA "The Big Dig".
Those she loved, she loved deeply and embraced often. And she would say it was far too long a wait for her children to have children. She taught her grandkids to love the sea, to walk everywhere, to explore everything, to paint seashells, and to play with abandon. A day out with Nana always ended with a hot bath because you'd be getting into something from head to toe.
She was proud of her Irish ancestry, becoming an Irish citizen in 2005. What fun was had visiting the homeland in 1985 to meet long-lost cousins and see the places from where her family emigrated. In the many Irish pubs and homes visited, she was welcomed as a familiar friend, always entering with her Irish eyes a-smiling.
She accomplished her goal of visiting all 50 states. In 2015, Kelly and Bill could see that her memory loss was "getting bad" so they took her on one final adventure to check off the final three states. No surprise, the trip was memorable and full of laughter.
Alzheimer's robbed her of much in her later years, yet she was still the life of the party at Harbor House. Every time the music played, she danced.
We are happy that her suffering has ended and full of grief for the loss of her smile, which up to the end a visit from loved ones could always bring out.
We thank all the friends and neighbors who helped her stay home in Brant Rock as long as possible: our entire family is deeply grateful to Bill and Sue who shouldered the largest part of this work. Also, thanks to the staff at Harbor House who took good care of her, especially Nurse Laura.
In lieu of flowers (and esp. gladiolas which she never cared for), please consider a donation in Mary's honor to the Alzheimer's Association.
