Gerald Victor Gabriel Obituary
Gerald Victor Gabriel, AKA Jerry with a “J’’ slipped the earthly bonds on March 18th surrounded by his loving family, Polly, his wife of 62 years, children Amy and John Gabriel, grandchildren Hilary, Gabe, and Luke Wallis, Olivia and Aurora Gabriel and sisters Laurie Gabriel and Lisa Gabriel Lane.
Jerry was born in Peekskill, NY in 1932. His father, Victor Hugo Gabriel was a teacher of English and coached soccer, swimming, and lacrosse (Hudson Valley Hall of Fame) at Peekskill Military Academy, where Jerry was raised. He graduated from Deerfield Academy and Rutgers University ‘54 where he studied English and was an All-American lacrosse player.
Jerry was ROTC at Rutgers and served 3 years in the Air Force where he was stationed in Cheyenne Wyoming, London, and Norway.
He met Polly working at Travelers Insurance in Boston where she trained him. They were married on September 27, 1959. They lived in Weymouth, MA until 1983 when Jerry took a job as chairman of the trust department at the Northhampton Institute for Savings. The lived nearby in Hadley, MA until 2011.
Jerry was a free-lance photographer specializing in sports action, dance and nature photography. They have lived in Ipswich, MA since 2011 in a lovely riverside neighborhood on Summer Street near children and grandchildren.
A true gentleman with a dry sense of humor, Jerry was the best father, husband, grandfather, brother and friend you could ever have. He was a great man.
A celebration of life will be held at the family home, 36 Summer Street, Ipswich, Massachusetts on their wedding anniversary, Sunday, September 27 at 1 pm followed by a barbeque.
