He was predeceased by: his parents, William Downing and Corrine Downing (Hardy); his wives, Patricia Downing (Stewart) and Maureen Downing (Gamelin); and his grandson Scotty.
He is survived by: his children, Linda Kerr (Michael), Laurie Tangaro (John), William J. Downing III and Christine Stevens (Scott); his stepchildren, Beth Ronan, Rich Ronan, Tina McCarthy, Mary Kavanaugh and Patty Anzalone; his grandchildren, Megan, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Courtney, Nicholas and Kayla; and his siblings, Marion Lawlor and Charles Downing. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Due to floral restrictions at the national cemetery, family requests donations be made in William's name to the Taunton Animal Shelter 821 West Water Street Taunton, MA 02780.
