He was predeceased by: his parents, Maurice C. Flaherty and Pearl E. Flaherty (Horne); his siblings, Elizabeth Bradley (Richard) of Bradford, Maurice C. Flaherty, Jr. and Mary; and his brother-in-law Robert Greenwood.

He is survived by: his wife Jean M. Flaherty; his children, Dr. Dorothy A. Flaherty, James M. Flaherty, Jr. (Linda), John C. Flaherty (Stacey) and Kevin P. Flaherty of Haverhill; and his grandchildren, Christina (Michael), James M. Flaherty III, Gavin M. Flaherty, Hayden C. Flaherty and Morgan R. Flaherty.
