He was predeceased by: his parents, Iva Shanks (Smith) and John Shanks; and his brother Jack Shanks of Cedar Park, Texas.. He is survived by: his girlfriend Debbie Lundgren; his sons, George Edwin Shanks, Jr. of Waldo and Steven Philip Shanks of Hanover; his grandchildren, Christopher Shanks, Rachel Shanks and Georgia Shanks of Naples, Maine.; his stepgrandchildren, Jake Dole and Samantha Dole of Naples, Maine.; and his sisters, Nancy Taylor of Easton and Dorothea Waters of Pembroke. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
