He was predeceased by: his children, Margaret Gutowski (Peggy) and John Dempsey; and his siblings, Alice Bowen and Matthew J. Dempsey, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Lucile Rae; his son-in-law William Gutowski of Ames; and his granddaughter Sarah Gutowski of Iowa City. He is also survived by brother-in-law and several sisters-in-law in North Carolina; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
