William N. Lanigan Jr. Obituary
William N. Lanigan Jr, longtime resident of Gloucester, died suddenly with family by his side, on Tuesday, March 3, 2025. Survived by his longtime partner, Patricia Lavoie Father of William N. Lanigan III, wife Audrey, of Arlington, Ma, Brian D. Lanigan of Chelmsford, John T. Lanigan, partner of Rosano Oliveira of Somerville, MA Predeceased by son Kevin N. Lanigan and James E. Lanigan. Also survived by sisters Regina E. Hanson Ohio and Jeramy E. Landauer Iowa along with grandchildren Brian, Aubrey, Kaylen and Liam.
Bill was born in Medford, MA on July 11, 1931, to the late Dr. William N. Lanigan and Marion E. Lanigan. He was a graduate of Medford High School-class of 1948, Tufts University-class of 1953 and Salem State College for a Master's Degree in History in 1970.
Bill was also a veteran having served in the Army stateside during the MId-1950's in Fort Lee NJ.
Post service Bill returned to Massachusetts and started a career in the insurance industry, eventually establishing his own adjuster's office in Nashua NH.
During this time Bill re-awakened his interest in athletics by refereeing in High School and College football. This 50 year commitment culminated in his presidency in the Association of New England Football Officials (ANEFO).
Since retirement Bill and Patricia escaped the New England Winters to their condo in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, creating memories and deep friendships. As the warm weather returned to New England they enjoyed his family home and his sailboat in Gloucester, MA . Interspersed were road trips to good friends in Long Island, the Hudson Valley and Montreal. Other trips they enjoyed included Florida, London, Paris and a cruise down the St Lawrence.
Friends and Family can pay respects at the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester, on Friday, March 7, 2025, from 5-7 pm. A private burial service will be held at a later date.
