William F. Gale III Obituary
William F. Gale, III, 87, passed away peacefully in Gloucester on August 3, 2024.
Bill was born in Gloucester on October 25, 1936, and was the son of William and Barbara Gale. He was predeceased by his wife Marily Gale, daughter Emily Gale, sons Brian and Michael Gale, grandchild Sean Tucker and great-grandchild Metta Gale. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Bonnie (Gilkey), three daughters Eileen wife of Ted Avtges, Julie wife of Charles Curll, and Ellen wife of James Garopolo; grandchildren Ian Tucker, Ben husband of Milly Gale, Dylan husband of Charlotte Gale, Scott husband of Tara Spinney, Kaitlyn wife of J.B. Seiner, Eric Sweeney, and Billy Curll; and great grandchildren Cole Gale, Cullin Spinney and Ava Riggio.
Bill was a proud graduate of Gloucester High School and Tufts University. After graduating from Tufts, Bill joined the Navy, achieving the rank of Commander in his 21 years of service, five years active duty and then in the Navy reserve. He formerly worked for IBM and AW Chesterton.
Known for his infectious smile, quick wit, and fun and generous spirit, Bill believed in giving back to the community. Besides his years with the Navy, Bill served his community by being a constant volunteer all his life, most recently for Harvest Meals, Gloucester Chamber of Commerce and the Grace Center.
He loved to travel with his wife Bonnie, and they had many adventures together. Bill had many interests and hobbies in his life. He loved playing tennis and golf, was a runner for many years that included running in various marathons. He was an avid Boston sports fan, a lover of reading and a history buff. Bill was a selfless friend, neighbor and community member but above all he loved his family, and they were always his first priority.
Friends and family are welcome to Bill's Celebration of life on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a service to follow at Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, Massachusetts.
