Vera Greene Obituary

Vera Greene passed away on June 30, 2024, age 94.

Vera attended Gloucester public schools and loved reminiscing about her adventures growing up in Gloucester with her brother Charles in the 1930s and '40s, exploring the wharves and fishing schooners where her father was a ship's cook. Vera became a great cook herself, she loved to prepare enough "for an army", and was part of the Gloucester High School Cafeteria team for many years.

Vera and her husband Hank were avid campers beginning when their 3 children were young. He built his first motorhome conversion using an old RIO school bus, and his last one from a retired Michaud 4104, naming each one the "Tin Teepee". They were a familiar sight parked in the yard off of Centennial Ave, and later, the yearly bus gatherings at Stage Fort Park and along the Annisquam canal at the High School. The bus traveled far and wide and Vera cooked many a splendid meal aboard, even Thanksgiving dinner on the Cape Cod Canal, complete with all the fixins'.

In the mid sixties, Hank and Vera were a part of a group of motorhome enthusiasts who started the Family Motor Coach Association. Each bus was assigned a number for an oval plaque displayed on the front of the bus, Hank chose #27 (the number of his Gorton's parking space). Today FMCA plaques have six digits. A few years later, the bus friends bought land near Wauchula, FL, built a park where they could all go and where most of them retired. It evolved over the years; today it is called the Florida SKP Resort. The park has a vibrant community and Vera had many wonderful friends and loved swimming in the park pool.

She is survived by her three children, Curtis Greene, Wayne Greene, and Karen Greene; 3 grandchildren, Lynds Jones, Jason "Jay" Greene, and Nicole Camarda; 4 great-grandchildren; sister Margaret Ann Bragdon; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Vera will be remembered for her loving and giving heart, her sense of style, hearty laugh, and out-going personality. She will be remembered fondly by special friend Renata, niece Linda, and close friends who were a part of her park life: Danny and Joan, Doris and Donald, Al and Lydia, Dale, and Sue.

Vera was the daughter of the late John D. Mayo and Selina B. (Pike) Mayo, both of whom had immigrated to Gloucester from Newfoundland. She was the wife of the late Hanford "Hank" Greene, and sister of the late Priscilla Blatchford and the late Charles Mayo.

A private ceremony will be held at a later date.
