Thomas J. Murphy Jr., 80, of Gloucester, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Care One Essex Park in Beverly. Born in Gloucester, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Martha (Allen) Murphy Sr.
Tom was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1961. Upon graduation, Tom enlisted in the United States Army and served overseas in Germany during the Vietnam War.
Tom worked as a machinist for many years at Gloucester Engineering. When Tom retired, he spent much of his time walking the boulevard and Stage Fort Park in Gloucester meeting friends new and old, human, and canine. He will be missed by those who knew him and wagged their tail when he spoke to them. When I am dead cry for me a little think of me sometimes but not too much. It is not good for you or your wife or your husband or your children to allow your thoughts to dwell too long on the dead. Think of me now and again as I was in life at some moment it is pleasant to recall; but not too long I am in peace and I shall leave you too-peace while you live let your thoughts be mostly with the living.
He is survived by his children, Carolyn Murphy, David Murphy, Yvonne Barreiro and Michael Murphy; grandchildren, Kylee Barreiro and Shyla Barreiro; great-grandchildren, Clair, Anthony and Ivy; his niece, Lisa Wilkie and her husband Lewis.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Lucille G. Doucette and her husband Frank, Jean Jones, and her husband Casey; nephew, Earle Pellitier and niece, Tana Dunkerly.
