Salvatore Ciolino Obituary
Salvatore "Sam" Ciolino 94, husband of the late Catherine "Katy" Ciolino passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2024thsurrounded by his children.
He was born to Domenic and Catherine (Moceri) Ciolino on August 12, 1929, in Terrasini Sicily. From an early age he was devoted to the church and went to mass every morning with his grandmother until he was 13 years old. He then went to live at the Cathedral in Monreale, Sicily until age 16 when he moved to America with his family.
He graduated from Gloucester High School class of 1949 where he was on the basketball and track teams. After high school he served in the U.S. Army in the medical company 196th RCT APO infantry regiment. He spent 6 months in Colorado and was then stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. After the Army he enrolled in New England College of Pharmacy and in 1958 he graduated with a B.S. as a Registered Pharmacist. He worked at Sterling drugstore for 7 years until he bought the former Muller Pharmacy on May 2, 1965. He owned and operated Ciolino's Pharmacy for 27 years. Early in his career he wrote a weekly column in the Gloucester Daily Times called "Your Pharmacist Speaks" educating the public on various medical issues. In 1992 he sold his business to Walgreens where he worked for another 16 years until his retirement. After his retirement he continued to volunteer for the Cape Ann Historical Museum until he was 89 years old.
Sam was an active member of St. Ann's Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister for many years at mass and delivered communion to those who were homebound and in nursing homes every Sunday. He was the Treasurer of St. Ann's PTA for several years and traveled twice to Cervicos, Dominican Republic on medical missions as acting pharmacist. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for almost 70 years, he was one of the first founders of the SHINE program in Gloucester and was on the Cape Ann Bowling league for over 50 years.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Catherine and her husband Paul Frontiero Jr, Jennie and her husband Chuck Psalidas, and Elizabeth and her husband Wain Olson, 2 sons, Frank and his wife Barbara Jean, James and his wife Julie. Grandsons, Salvatore, James and Christopher Frontiero, Andrew Psalidas and his wife Lindsey, Jason, Anthony, Nicholas Psalidas and his wife Meghan, Joseph Ciolino, Salvatore and his wife Phoebe, Stephen and his fiancé Ella and Michael Ciolino, Thomas and Jonathan Olson. Granddaughters Alexandria Psalidas, Mikayla Ciolino, Elizabeth Catalini and her fiancé Bobby Chavez, Nicole Alves and her husband David. 6 Great granddaughters, Chloe, Quinn, Cali Psalidas, Emelia Catalini, Charlotte Bryson and Makenna Psalidas, his brother Anthony and his wife Josephine Ciolino and his sister MaryGrace, whom he adored and her husband Gaetano Brancaleone, one sister-in-law Lena Anderson, 2 brothers in law Gaspar Interrante and Leo Sabato, several nieces and nephews and his longtime friends Victor and Janet Andreotti.
In addition to his wife Katy he was predeceased by his son Domenic Ciolino, grandson Paul Frontiero III, his brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Grace Ciolino, in-laws Fred and Josie Sallah, Sarah Interrante, John Anderson, Rosalie Sabato, Joe and Julie Favaloro, Sofie and Mary Favaloro and Sonny and Evelyn Favaloro.
The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Pearce and Fr. Jim Achadinha, their kindness did not go unnoticed, Care Dimensions for their care and support, especially his nurses Patrick and Brenda and care giver Karen Tucker.
Visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Tuesday, May 7, from 4-7pm. Mass will be celebrated in St. Ann's Church, (Holy Family Parish) 60 Prospect Street, Gloucester, on Wednesday, May 8, at 11A.M. Burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery.
