Peter S. Tibbetts Obituary
Peter S. Tibbetts of Gloucester, MA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at his residence.
Peter was born in Brockton MA, raised in Beverly, and graduated from Beverly High and Trade Schools in 1955. He went to work for the Murray Printing Company in Westford MA until 1958 when he joined the U.S. Coast Guard where his favorite assignment was on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter General Greene in Gloucester. Other assignments found him flying with the International Ice Patrol out of Newfoundland and search and rescue missions flying out of the Winter Island air base in Salem, MA and San Francisco, CA.
In 1962 he worked on the Distant Early Warning System (DEW LINE) on the Greenland Icecap for the Federal Electric Corp. as an electronic technician until 1965 at which time he attended the College of San Mateo, San Mateo CA. He graduated in 1967 with an associate degree in Industrial Electronics and went to work for Raytheon Company in North Andover as a test engineer. In 1969 he became the Foreman for the Gloucester Engineering electrical department until 1984. He then went to Varian Associates, working in their Foreign Product Support Department until 1986 when he broke away from the 9 to 5 routine and started Tibbetts Electric which was a "One Man Company" for many years. He enjoyed working in the electrical trade and servicing his many customers over the years.
Pete's many interests including skiing, scuba diving, photography, gardening, working on his computer and model railroading. He belonged to the North Shore Clamdiggers Camping Club and was a life member and former secretary to the Salisbury Point Railroad Historical Society in Amesbury, MA; a life member of the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post 3 of the American Legion in Gloucester where he was the Adjunct for many years, a life member of the Amvets, Post 32 of Gloucester where.
He was founder and Chairman of the Post's "500 Club", an activity dedicated to raising funds for the Post's scholarship program. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Rose Baker Senior Center where he assisted in the computer lab. During the holiday seasons, you may have seen him delivering meals to homebound residents around Gloucester on behalf of the Legion.
Pete spent the last 15-20 years travelling the world quenching his thirst for adventure and experiencing new things. He retired at a young 80 and spent many mornings walking good harbor with his four-legged friend, working out with friends at the local Y, meeting others for coffee and always seen driving around the cape, one if his favorite things to do.
He is survived by his daughter, Molly Catherine (Tibbetts) Scannell; son-in- law, Richard; loving grandfather to Ava, Clara, Hayden and Dustin; friend and former wife, Claudia (Barton) Tibbetts.
He was predeceased by his father, Harris Herbert Tibbetts and mother, Helen Theresa (Cutting) Tibbetts, both of Naples Florida, formerly of Beverly and Rockport, MA; brothers, Harris of Swampscott, and David of Sandwich; son, Jason Barton Tibbetts, and partner Charlie Harvey.
His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester. His burial will follow in Beechbrook Cemetery, Gloucester.
