Planted in memory of Pauline M. Gillis Pauline M. Gillis Obituary Pauline M. Gillis passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 21, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born in Newburyport, MA on August 11, 1929, to Frederic and Rose Marquis and grew up in Derry, NH. She was the wife of Robert J. Gillis, who died in 2012. Pauly and Bob raised their family while managing the Bass Rocks Golf Club together for 37 years. They retired to Florida in 1993 and had many happy years there. Pauly enjoyed playing golf with her many friends, and although her game didn't usually meet her own high standards, she had a hole in one to her credit. She was a top-notch bowler having competed in the women's league at the Cape Ann Bowling Center for many years. Her passion was bridge, which she played at a high level until very recently. In Florida she was a bridge director, managing games with over 100 players. One of the great connections between Pauly and her family was her famous crepes. Family competition over the years resulted in records for who ate the most crepes. Pauly spent her final months at Seacoast Nursing Home, where she was quick with a smile and treated by the staff there with endless care and kindness.
Pauly is survived by her six children, Stephen Gillis, Robert Gillis Jr. and Pixie Harrington, Michael and Maryke Gillis, Daniel and Zoe Gillis, Missy and Shayne Kintzel and Maureen and John Collins; grandchildren, Scott and Todd Wonkka (Marissa), Jennifer Gillis (Saeed), Robert Gillis III (Freya), Jason Harrington (Melissa), Patrick, Meghan and Hannah Gillis, Justin (Ashley) and Jonathan (Brittany) Kintzel, Krysta Collins, Emily (Jimmy) Towey and Michael Collins; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, brother-in-law, William Gillis, sisters-in-law Elaine Hiltunen and Ann Laferrier and her husband Richard, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Pauly was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Betty (Thibodeau) Gillis, her sister, Rita Werner and brother-in-law, Richard Werner, her brother Maurice, her sister-in-law, Fran Marquis, sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Chartier & her husband Jack, Margaret Wildes and her husband William, Helen Egan, Virginia Leary and her husband Richard, brothers-in-law, Donald Gillis, John Gillis & his wife Louise, Thomas Gillis and James Gillis.
Services will be private and are being handled by Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA.
