Michael R. Stelluto Obituary
Michael Robert Stelluto, 92, of Gloucester, passed away on November 1, 2024, of natural causes. Mike was the middle child of the late Salvatore and Filamena Stelluto. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Janis Davidson Stelluto, his parents and brother Anthony Stelluto.
Mike is survived by his sister Rosalie O'Donnell, three children, Elizabeth Dunaier (Howard), Laura Flessel (Mark), & David Stelluto (Susan) and four grandchildren Alexandra, Katherine, Jessica and Nathan.
Mike's life began in Leominster, MA., on April 9, 1932, surrounded by an extensive Italian family who immigrated to the U.S. from San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy in the early 1900's. His life was filled with the love of family, community, and good fortune.
He graduated from Leominster High School 1950, received his bachelor's from UMass Amherst 1954 and went on to graduate from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine 1958 where he met his "blue-eyed beauty" Janis of Minden, Nebraska; they were married on September 7, 1957. Mike then interned at University of Florida and completed a residency in OB/GYN at Boston University 1963. He served as a Captain in the US Army Stationed at Fort Bragg, NC for two years during Vietnam.
Michael had a successful career as an OB/GYN for more than 50 years; during that time, he delivered over 10, 000 babies and was able to both practice and teach before retiring at 80. He split his career between private practice at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester and academia at Brigham & Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Stelluto would frequently run into former patients all around town who exclaimed: "You delivered my baby" or "You were my favorite doctor". As proud as he was to have touched so many local lives in the Cape Ann community, his teaching and mentoring at BWH/HMS and contributions to the Admissions Committee were career highlights. His commitment and contributions to his students were evident from his many teaching awards as well as the baskets full of thank-you notes peppered throughout his home.
Since 1965 he was an open-armed and beloved member of the Gloucester community, sharing his zest, wry sense of humor, and dedication - in service and in fun. These shone in all Mike's endeavors including: his service on the Board of Health, his play at Bass Rocks Golf Course, his daily visits to the YMCA, his walks to Good Harbor Beach and his beloved neighborhood sharing stories and advice with all that he met. Those who called Mike family, friend, doctor, colleague, advisor or teacher were fortunate. His big smile and warm heart will be missed by all the lives he touched.
A Celebration of Life will be announced and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Cape Ann YMCA, 7 Gloucester Crossing Rd or the Sawyer Free Library, 21 Main St, Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester.
