Mary P. Gentile Obituary
Mary Patricia (Crowley) Gentile, 90, of Gloucester passed away peacefully on June 19, 2022, at Seacoast Nursing Home surrounded by her family.
Born in Birkenhead England in 1932, Mary was the daughter of John and Margaret Crowley.
Mary was 6 years old when World War II began. Her father was in the British Army and was away for long periods of time. She lived through a time of gas masks, rations and air raids. When the sirens would sound her family would head for the nearest shelter, the local train station. Despite the many adversities in her life Mary always had a positive, happy outlook and looked on the good side of things. She appreciated each and every day. She got up out of bed every day even when the pain that she was having would have allowed her to stay in bed and pull the covers up. She would always say "I don't want to miss anything" Mary came to Gloucester in 1947 when she was fourteen years old. She later met the love of her life, Carmen Gentile and they shared many happy years of marriage until Carmen passed away in 1987.
Family meant everything to Mary and she especially loved spending time with her little GG's, a name she lovingly called her great-grandchildren. Mary was fondly called "Nana Nono" by her grandchildren, great-children and their friends.
Before Carmen died Mary and Carmen enjoyed traveling including trips back home to England. Mary and Carmen also enjoyed many Saturday nights dancing with friends.
Mary had many friends including a large group of friends and former co-workers who she spent time with playing cards, traveling to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun and spending monthly birthday lunches together. Mary also enjoyed spending time at the Senior Center playing Bingo.
Mary was an avid reader and even when she came home from a trip to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun she always had a new book. She was not there so much for the gambling as she was the bookstore. She was a knitter who made crafts and sweater sets for all her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her three children, Terry O'Hanley (and son-in-law Mike) of Gloucester, Tony Gentile (and daughter-in-law Pam) of Greenland, NH and Christopher Gentile (daughter-in-law Kathy) of Gloucester, her 7 grandchildren, Robert O'Hanley (Rebecca), Michael O'Hanley (Mary), Matthew O'Hanley, Crowley Gentile, Christopher Gentile, Rory Gentile (Ashley), Mikayla Josephson (Eric), her brother John Crowley of England, her sister-in-law Mary Gentile. Her great-grand children, Adelyn, Aubrey, Isla, Mia, Caden, Quinn, Aurora, Dezi, Frankie, Jase, Letty & Eiley. Also many loved nieces, nephews and their spouses.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Carmen, her parents John and Margaret Crowley, two brothers, James and Thomas Crowley, brother-in-laws, Rosario, Frank and Tony Gentile, George Shannon, Eugene Giovanni and sister-in-laws, Millie Gentile, Providenza Giovanni, Elvira Shannon and Pamela Crowley.
Mary's family is comforted in knowing that she has joined hands once again with her beloved husband, Carmen, and her family all of whom she missed terribly.
Mary was a member of the Seafood Retirees and the YMCA group, the Wet Hens.
The Gentile Family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at Seacoast Nursing Home and Care Dimensions. The dedication to their profession and the kind and compassionate care they provided our mother will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's name can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Care Dimensions or the Senior Center.
