Martha Jo Versprille Obituary

Martha Jo Versprille, of Gloucester, MA, died suddenly on January 27, 2025. Martha was born and raised with her siblings in Rochester and Pittsford, NY. She was educated in the NY public school system, Boston University, Salem State College, and Boston College. After college, Massachusetts became her home as she resided in Boston, Beverly, and for the better part of her life in Gloucester, MA.

Martha was a smart, no nonsense woman who cared deeply for her friends, her family, and the people of Gloucester. She was a dedicated social work clinician who worked for over two decades with children of all ages, leaving a legacy of care, compassion and love with the families she kept a watchful eye on. She left the world a better place, in spaces where most would not be privy to see.

Martha lived a quiet life in her cozy home with her dog, Jovi, and was happiest when walking with him in their favorite spots. She was a great cook, best known for her pies and baked goods. Martha was a voracious reader and a regular at the library. She was blessed with a green thumb. Friends and family were fortunate to enjoy her upper deck porch garden overlooking the ocean in Lanesville.

Martha is survived by sisters Sherrill Versprille and Jeanne Shiao, of Fairport, NY, brother Peter Versprille and his wife Mary of Rochester, NY, and sister-in-law Ellen Versprille, of Franklin, MA. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends. Martha was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Marie Versprille of Pittsford, NY, sister Mary Nicoll and her husband Jim of Fairport, NY, brother in law Daniel Shiao of Fairport, NY and brother Hank Versprille of Franklin, MA. She was also predeceased by her pets Noah, Devil Dog, and Dr. B.B.

Think of Martha when you wear your best lipstick, walk by the ocean, or stand up for what you believe in. Friends and family are invited to the visiting hours at Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA., 01930 on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025, from Noon - 2pm followed by a service at 2pm.
