Lloyd B. McManus Jr. Obituary

Lloyd B. "Mac" McManus Jr. – of Magnolia and Marston Mills, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday evening, December 29, 2024, at the age of 80. Beloved husband of Rochelle (Marques) McManus, to whom he was devoted for more than 50 years. Born in Hyannis, he was the dear son of the late Lloyd B. and Thelma (Petow) McManus.

Mac was a force of nature with a big heart, piercing hazel eyes, and an unforgettable deep, rumbling voice that simultaneously commanded attention and projected warmth and humor. He was the captain of the ship, wherever he went. Whether at his home in Magnolia or on or near the waters of Cape Cod, Mac presided over a crew of loving family members and a wide circle of devoted friends.

Mac grew up in Hyannis, then attended Bentley University where he studied accounting. Following graduation, he became licensed as a CPA and joined the national public accounting firm of Seidman and Seidman, where he achieved partnership. He subsequently founded his own firm in Boston (Lloyd B. McManus, CPA, PC) and he dedicated himself to making it one of the top CPA firms in Boston. Up until the day of his passing, Mac was still working tirelessly on behalf of the many longtime clients with whom he was honored to work. Mac was also the President and Treasurer of the Gloucester Marine Railways for more than 20 years, and he was a dedicated and generous philanthropist.

Mac was happiest on the ocean, sailing one of his many boats, including "Joe Mac," "Chanzia," and "Grace.". Among his many gifts to his children was teaching them to sail and the family spent many summers on Nantucket Sound, sharing their love of sailing and racing. Mac treasured quiet days with his wife Rochelle when they could dig for clams and then watch the sunset from the stern of "Grace" over cocktails and the occasional cigar. Friends always looked forward to Mac's legendary stuffed clams, or "stuffies" as he called them, which he generously shared throughout the season.

Mac always loved gathering with family and friends and enjoyed hosting big holiday gatherings with Rochelle in Magnolia and Marston Mills. One of his favorite traditions was decorating the family Christmas tree with his collection of Christopher Rodko ornaments, along with a toy train that enraptured his grandchildren. Mac cherished the time he spent with family and friends, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his wife, with whom he shared fifty years, he is survived by four devoted children, Alexandria McManus and her husband Colin McDermott of Portland, Maine; Michele Genovese and her partner Chris Wheeler of Gloucester; Lloyd "Burt" McManus III and his wife Jeannie of Canton; and Scott McManus and his wife Patrice of Barnstable. He also leaves his five cherished grandchildren, Margaret Grace McDermott; and Cameron, Lindsay, Sophia and Joseph McManus. He is also survived by his loving sister, Joanne Murphy of Centerville; his sister-in-law, Francine Ruta of Gloucester; his brother-in-law, Sal Marques and wife Christine of Gloucester; and his beloved nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, Gloucester, on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Visiting hours will be held at the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street in Gloucester, on Friday, January 3, from 6:00-8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Mac to support cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 or via jimmyfund.org/gift.
