Katherine McTeague Obituary
Katherine "Kitty" McTeague, 79, of Gloucester passed away peacefully at home Friday morning, September 9, 2022, with her loving family by her side. She was the devoted wife to the late Robert "Red" F. McTeague with whom she shared 43 years of marriage and true companionship.
Kitty was born November 8, 1942, in Peabody, MA to the late Charles and Julia (Scangos) Karvelas. She graduated from Gloucester High School in 1960 and later completed her studies at Chandler School for Women in Boston.
Kitty and her family owned and operated several restaurants in the Cape Ann area, including Charlie's Muffin Shop where she met the love of her life, Red. Kitty spent many years working alongside her family and children, teaching them a strong work ethic and real-life lessons at Karvelas' on the Boulevard and the Ship Ahoy in Essex, all the while creating memories and establishing lifelong friendships.
Later in life Kitty worked and retired from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Kitty and Red spent their summers on Cape Ann and winters in Naples FL, where they enjoyed playing cards with their many friends and entering cribbage tournaments. She was also a member of the Magnolia cribbage club.
She will be remembered as an incredibly devoted loving mother who loved to belly up to the piano and sing and play whatever anyone requested, but her favorite thing to play and sing was Galway Bay (the funny version of course), although she was equally thrilled to lead sing-alongs of holiday favorites. She was also an incredible cook and loved having family gatherings.
Kitty is predeceased by her brother, James Karvelas, and survived by her grateful children (who remained in Gloucester) Julie Ramsdell and her fiance Artie Crawford, Joseph Fitzgerald and his companion Christen Fleming, Maureen Lane, Eileen Fitzgerald and her companion Gary Belcher, Diana McTeague-Scott and her husband Governor Phil Scott of Berlin, VT, Linda Wasuta and son-in-law William Wasuta both of Jefferson NH; beloved brother George Karvelas and his wife Judi, who was a true best friend and sister to Kitty; sisters-in-law, Cathy Karvelas and Cynthia Damon; her 16 adored grandchildren, Zachary, Gregory, Nadia, Zoya and Jacob Wasuta, Amber Marsh, Aidan Fitzgerald, Dylan, Julia and Sophia Lane, Evan, Alanna and Connor Fitzgerald and Alyssa, Jamie, and Tyler Ramsdell; 2 great grandchildren, Boe and Nia Hicks; nephews, Charlie (and wife Kim), Tony (and Leah), Chuck (and Kristine), Christopher, and John Karvelas.
Her. Funeral Service will be held in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. The burial will follow in Dolliver Memorial Cemetery, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
