John J. Magner Jr. Obituary
John Joseph Magner, Jr. of Gloucester, MA passed away on November 20, 2024.
John, who was always known as Jack, served in the Navy during the Korean Era. After that he went to work for MA Bell. While there, he was assigned to install phones at Harvard University where his communication skills and natural curiosity brought him into the world of higher academics. While there, he was selected to attend Trinity University in Ireland where he studied Irish Literature, the Russian language, and Guiness Beer.
One of six children, Jack was the first-born to John and Rose Magner of Medford. He was an extraordinary person, a true renaissance man. Jack was an avid Boston sports fan, an outstanding chef, a mechanic who could fix anything, an All-Star Catcher for the US Navy's 6th Fleet and an accomplished chicken farmer. Beyond that, Jack was a talented poet, a philosopher, an avid reader - he could quote from and discuss everything from Advanced Cooking Techniques to Albert Camus.
Jack died peacefully at home at the age of 89. He was with his close friends as he tip-toed out of this world. He leaves behind his many Gloucester buddies, especially his dear friends at Pratty's CAV, aka the Parker Street Palace. Jack also leaves his surviving siblings, Terence, Laurence, and Jean, and is joining his late beloved wife of 62 years, Ruthie, and his late brothers, Edward and Robert.
Goodbye, Jack. You'll be missed. You were the Finest Kind.
A graveside service will be held at Seaside Cemetery in Gloucester on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
