Ida J. Macchia Obituary

Ida (Andella) Macchia, 94, of Gloucester, formerly of Arlington and Cambridge, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation in Gloucester.

Ida was born and raised in East Cambridge and was a Cambridge resident until her marriage. She graduated from Cambridge Latin High School and spent two years at Boston University.

Ida married Ugo Macchia in 1954. They settled in Arlington Heights where they raised their family for 30 years.

In 1984, they moved to Lanesville, Gloucester, where Ida blossomed into a true renaissance woman. She quilted, wrote poetry, took sculpting and painting classes, and forged meaningful friendships along the way.

She embraced all that Gloucester offered. She celebrated the fishing community by attending the St. Peter's Fiesta (with their legendary greasy pole contest!), and the art community by strolling the famed Rocky Neck Art Colony.

She loved yard sales, flea markets, and church bazaars, adept at spotting the best finds, making it look easier than it is.

Ida was an inspired cook, happiest when cooking for her family for Sunday dinners and holidays.

Over the years, Ida expressed her unrelenting love and pride for her children and grandchildren, the hallmarks of her life. She was a nurturing, compassionate, supportive parent, available to help with homework or feed a group of friends, or lend sage, nonjudgmental advice. She had the innate ability to make each of her grandchildren feel uniquely special by highlighting their strengths and individuality.

Ida is survived by her son Robert Macchia and wife Susan of Chelmsford; daughters, Lisa Spinosa and husband David Spinosa of Charlottesville, VA., Lauren Macchia of Gloucester, Idalyn Macchia Gilstad and husband Charles of Martha's Vineyard; grandchildren, Bianca Spinosa and her husband Peter Radics, Amanda Macchia and her husband Michael Krodel, Michael Spinosa and his wife Ciara, Anthony Macchia, David Spinosa Jr. and his partner Camila; sister, Anna Andella; brother, Mario Andella and his wife Phyllis; sisters-in-law, Bianca Sorrentino, Geraldine DiCicco; brother-in-law Carmen Macchia and his wife Susan, and so many more dear relatives and friends.

She is pre-deceased by her husband Ugo Macchia and son Ugo (Buddy) Macchia.

Visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. followed by a service also at Greely Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. The burial will be held at Seaside Cemetery, 88R Langsford Street, Gloucester, following the service.
