Gunilla Katarina Caulfield Obituary

Gunilla Katarina Caulfield (nee Hellström), born December 26, 1941, in Stockholm, Sweden, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on March 28, 2024. A woman of remarkable talents, Gunilla was a beloved local author, an artist, and a nationally renowned quilter with one of her creations on permanent loan to the Smithsonian. She spent many years brightening the stacks as a Reference Librarian at Rockport Carnegie, and later the Denghausen Libraries.

Gunilla's literary legacy includes the beloved Annie Quitnot trilogy, set on Cape Ann, alongside several standalone novels, compilations of short stories, and a biography of WWII nurse June Houghton Sullivan. Her work at the Carnegie and Denghausen Libraries in Rockport underscored her commitment to learning and culture. Gunilla's efforts in the restoration of Millbrook Meadow in Rockport highlighted her dedication to creating and curating environments where the community could engage with beauty and our local history.

Remembered for her vibrant, generous spirit, and the ability to collect friends with ease, Gunilla's impact on the lives she touched is immeasurable. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Sidney Kanegis. She leaves behind her beloved husband of over fifty years, Thomas Caulfield of Rockport, MA; her siblings, Lena Sparring (nee Hellström) and Elisabet Malmberg (nee Hellström) of Sweden; her children, Mark Kanegis, James Caulfield, and Katrina Wightman (nee Caulfield), along with their spouses; and five cherished grandchildren, who will carry forward her legacy of creativity, generosity, and love.
