Gloria S. Melo Obituary
Gloria Simas Soares, 97 passed away on Sunday July 21st surrounded by her loving family at her home in Gloucester. Gloria was born on March 12, 1927 in Lajes Do Pico, Acores to her parents Joao and Biatriz. Gloria was the oldest of three siblings. Gloria moved to the states in 1966 with her husband Manuel Melo and shared over 35 years of marriage together before Manuel passed away in 1990. Gloria had one daughter, Maria (Saozinha) Machado who resides in Gloucester with her husband Joseph.
Gloria was an honorary member of the DES Portuguese Club where she served as Ladies Auxiliary president amongst other roles since moving to Gloucester. She enjoyed baking sweet bread, especially the week of the Holy Ghost trinity. She was a permanent figure at the Penny Sales hosted by the DES and she enjoyed with passion the celebration of the feast of the Holy Ghost and cooked the traditional dinner "Sopas" many times over.
Gloria was a devoted Catholic and attended Mass weekly on Sundays at Our Lady of Good Voyage church. Gloria continued to receive communion at home while watching Portuguese mass on television.
Gloria loved to crochet and make tablecloths for family and friends. In her later days she loved to do puzzles and play card games and was most fond of the game sueca.
Gloria was predeceased by her husband Manuel her mother Biatriz, her father Joao and her brother Manuel.
Gloria leaves behind her daughter Maria (Saozinha) and her husband Joseph. Her grandsons, Joseph M, Jason and his wife Tiffany of Gloucester, Jamie and his wife Christina of Florida and her six great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Madison and Sofia of Gloucester. Alex, Andrew and Annabelle of Florida. Gloria also leaves behind her sister Lina Neves of Gloucester and many dear family members, godchildren, cousins and friends.
Gloria will be deeply missed by everyone that knew and loved her. Her love and spirit will remain in our hearts forever.
Visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 4-7p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect Street, on Friday, July 26, at 11a.m. Burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery.
