Daniel Robert McDougall, 86, of Gloucester, MA, died peacefully at home on December 19th, 2023.
Dan was born in Salem, MA in 1937 to Catherine (Quinn) and Elmer McDougall. Dan grew up in a tight-knit family where his parents instilled the values of hard work and responsibility. In the early years, Dan spent many days on the road, working for Kent Manufacturing in a research and engineering capacity while also attending Boston University at night. In 1970 Dan and his older brother Michael launched a highly respected advertising and public relations firm in the greater Boston area, McDougall Associates.
Dan was renowned for his community involvement. He served as a Trustee of the North Shore Medical Center (Salem Hospital) for over 20 years, as well as the Captain Bertram Society of Salem Hospital. He was on the Board of the Peabody Essex Museum for close to 20 years. He was an Advisor for the Symphony by the Sea and a director of Salem State College. He received numerous awards for his service, including the Good Scout Award, awarded by the Yankee Clipper Council to those who exemplify the ideals of the Boy Scouts of America in 1993.
Dan was an avid sailor and navigator, a passion which he shared with his wife, Jenifer. They were always to be found on their boat, the Dame of Lorne, and in later years shared this passion with overnight sails for their grandchildren. Dan's commitment to sailing led to his position as Commodore of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead during their 100th anniversary.
Dan was also an ardent art collector and dealer, where he and Jenifer entertained patrons in their beautiful Gloucester home. Dan specialized in marine art, as well as other antique maritime artifacts. Dan has generously donated many of his collections to local museums.
He is survived by his wife, Jenifer, brother, Michael McDougall and sister, Jean Geraghty. He is also survived by his four children, Kimberley Sullivan, David McDougall and wife, Alison, Bonnie Duval and husband Dan, and John McDougall and wife Ai-Thu, and six grandchildren, Elisabeth McDougall, Ashley Sullivan, Maddie Duval, Alexander McDougall, Matthew McDougall, and Daniel T. McDougall. Dan was preceded in death by his brother Leo.
Dan was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He lived a full life and will be sorely missed by all his family and many friends.
