Alvaro Lopes Obituary

Alvaro Lopes, 84, of Gloucester, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Patricia A. (Burke) Lopes. Born November 28, 1937, in Ilhavo, Portugal, son of the late Joao and Conceicao (Silva) Lopes.

Alvaro moved to Gloucester in 1953 and was the star kicker of the Gloucester football team before his graduation in 1957. After graduation he joined the US Army. When Alvaro received his honorable discharge, he moved back to Gloucester and met the love of his life Patricia and raised their two children and volunteered many hours coaching the Fisherman's youth soccer team. Alvaro worked for over 40 years at Americold cold storage in Gloucester.

He is survived by his daughter, Luiza Contonio and her husband Jeff of Gloucester; his son, John-Robert Lopes and his wife Joan of San Antonio, TX and 4 grandchildren, that were his world: Michael and Adam Contonio and Serena and Jesse Lopes; sister Fern Diamantides and her husband John of Saugus and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Maria Luiza Carrapichano and his stepmother Rose Lopes, stepbrothers, Gil, Raymond, and stepsister, Linda Roderick, in-laws, Robert and Emma Burke.

There will be no services at this time. Donations in his memory may be made to Cape Ann Veterans Services, City Hall, 9 Dale Ave., Gloucester, MA. 01930. Please make checks payable to Veterans Services.

Services will be set for a future date to be determined.
