Adrienne M. Verga Obituary
Adrienne M. (Pothier) Verga, 84, of Gloucester passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, September 27, 2022, at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Gloucester, MA on March 24, 1938, daughter of the late Gerald P. and Mary I (Sears) Poth Adrienne was a graduate of St. Ann's High School, Class of 1956, where she was the class secretary. She met her future husband Tony at the age of 15 at St. Ann's. She was a true partner in marriage and on her husband's political campaigns. Many people will remember enjoying the hundreds of sandwiches and cookies she spent hours preparing as the official "caterer" for the annual Vote Verga Parade of Lights fundraising cruises.
In her earlier years she worked for Sterling Drug Store and Boston Mutual as a receptionist, then at Destino's Sub Shop, and the Visiting Nurses Association. She worked at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church for over 40 years as a receptionist for Fr. Alves. She often helped translate for Portuguese speaking parishioners. Her commitment to the Catholic faith and her Portuguese heritage ran deep. She was also a longtime member of the Guild of Our Lady's.
Adrienne was a loving, devoted, and selfless mother. She raised eight children and helped raise all of her grandchildren. She was the nurturer, the voice of reason, and the peacemaker. Her empathy and compassion helped family, friends, and strangers alike. She was always busy, but she was never too busy to help anyone in need. Her true joy was knowing that everyone was healthy and happy. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Adrienne is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Anthony J. Verga Sr.,: children, Mick Verga and his wife Ping, Jeanmarie Chartier and her husband Glenn, Peter Verga and his wife Geraldine, Anthony Verga and his wife Linda Vaughan, Matthew Verga, Kevin Verga and his wife Charlene, Steven Verga and his wife Almiris, Mayor Gregory Verga and his wife Kellie; 14 grandchildren, Paul Catania, Rachel Estevez and her husband Gregory, Abigail Ragusa and her husband Stephen, Monique Verga, Patrick Verga and his partner Emma Strubell, Benjamin Tavares, Jacob Verga, Alexandra Verga, Hannah Verga, Mariah Verga, Julia Verga, K.C. Verga, Joseph Verga and Amanda Verga; 5 great grandchildren, Josephine Estevez, Gabriella Estevez, Vinny Estevez, Cameron Ragusa and Angelina Ragusa; brother, Alan Pothier and his wife Anne; sisters-in-law, Nina Francis and her companion David LaPorto and Mary Verga; brothers-in-law, James Verga and his wife Rosalie, Joseph Verga and his wife Paula; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brother, Gerald Pothier; sisters-in-law, Shirley Pothier, Theresa Pothier, Frances Carcia and her husband Tony, Grace Scola, and her husband Thomas; brothers-in-law, Salvatore Verga and his wife Angelina and Philip Verga.
Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at 12 noon. All attendees are required to wear face coverings during Mass. The burial will be held privately.
A visitation will be held prior to the Mass in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
