He was predeceased by: his wife Irene R. Brayton (Taylor); his parents, Alden Brayton and Florence Brayton (Potter); his sister Ruth B. Waite Howes; his niece Christine Gallop; and also Honorable George H. Potter.

He is survived by: his sister Beatrice Gallop; his children, Gardner P. Brayton Jr. (LouAnn) of Dartmouth, Curtis A. Brayton, Tim B. Pimental of Westport and Debra A. Gautesen (Thomas); his grandchildren, Nathan (Sarah), Kendrin (Mike), James, Juila, Rita, Kristi (Josh), Megan (Mark), Kaylee (Stephen) and Karysa; and his great grandchildren, Gabby, Jaedyn, Alexis, James, Ella, Kadence, Bryson, Billy, Cole, Ali, Ava, Audrey, Drew and Stephen.
