He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles J. Backus and Irene Backus (Ross). He is survived by: his wife Peggy-Ann Backus (Sherman); and his brother James R. Backus (Christine) of South Hadley. He is also survived by cousins, extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 56 Saint Anthony Street, Chicopee, MA 01013.
