He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Szpila and Ellen Szpila (O'Brien); and his brother Donald Szpila. He is survived by: his wife Susan Koperniak; his daughters, Kristina Inglis (Kyle) of Arlington, VA and Kate Szpila (Matthew Kohner) of Bangkok, Thailand; his brother Jerry Szpila of Adams; and his grandchildren, Quinten, Cazimer, Xander, Ethan and Emma. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
