James F. Feener Obituary
James F. Feener died peacefully at Gloucester Health Care on March 10, 2022.
James was born in Gloucester on April 11, 1947, to Christine Hemeon Feener. He spent many summers on Brier Neck in Gloucester. He attended Lynn Classical High School and later Boston University. In the 1970's he travelled the world as president of Feener & Steiger Seafoods, Inc., "Dealers in Atlantic coast eel and other specialty items." He travelled through Europe and Asia marketing eels that were packed in specialized, wax coated, cardboard crates of his design. Later he lived in Boxford for several years during which time he commuted by bicycle regularly 40 miles from Boxford to his landscaping work in Gloucester. This resulted in his having "the best legs on Cape Ann."
James lived on his own terms and spoke his own way. At some point, he decided that he disliked vowels and changed his name from "James" to "JMS" (pronounced "jay – em – ess"). He read atlases and dictionaries for fun. He was an expert skier and excelled at many sports. He was a talented artist, and a gentle soul. He lived his last years contentedly at Gloucester Health Care where he leaves many friends. "He answered to no one but himself," said his friend Edie Choate.
