He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Theresa Schmittlein and Carl Schmittlein; his wife Barbara Bickart; his children, Brigitte Schmittlein (San Francisco) and Gabe Schmittlein (Brooklyn); and his siblings, Joseph, Jeffrey (Jennifer), Carol, Mark (Lynne) and Roger Schmittlein. He was also cherished by several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, he requested donations to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation or to any organization that supports cancer research.
