He was predeceased by: his wife Verda Murray Gates; his parents, John Lee Gates and Jessie Lee Gates; his brothers, William Byron Gates and John Edward Gates; and his stepchildren, Karla Lee Charles and Jimmy E. Smith.
He is survived by: his daughter Lori (Todd Rios); his brother Robert (Candy Gates); and his stepchildren, Kathy Smith, Kim (Gloria Smith) and Justin Daniel. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and one great-grandchild.
