She was predeceased by: her parents, Ivy Rolen and Bertie Rolen; her husband Walter H. Gates, Jr.; and her sister Marilyn Fontenot. She is survived by: her sons, Gerald Gates (Sandra), Ronald Gates and Steve Gates (Georgia). She is also survived by eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
