He is survived by: his wife Virginia E. Brewer; his children, Johnnie Matthew Brewer III, Alvin Lynn Brewer and Matilda Cristie Simmons (Kevin); his grandchildren, Quinton Brewer, Casey Simmons (Maddy), Adriana Brewer and Conner Simmons; his great grandchild Ryder Simmons; and his siblings, Wayne Haney, Tillie Scott, Linda Fitzpatrick, Daisy Thompson, Marilyn Heggie and Elaine Pittman. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
