He was predeceased by: his parents, David Hanes and Myrtie Hanes; his wife Sylvia Hanes; his son James Martin Hanes Jr.; his son-in-law Billie Chisholm Sr.; and his sister Glenoria Thompson.
He is survived by: his daughters, Sylvia Chisholm and Alice Jones; his grandchildren, Sylvia Ziegler (Joseph), James Harrell (Tiffany), Mary Cappo (Carson), Rebecca Sisson (Todd) and Brandy Overton; and his brother Jimmy Dale Thompson. He is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
