He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Johnston and Mittie Johnston; his parents-in-law, Webb and Grace Roberts; and his siblings, Mavis Crawford, Merlene Bailey, Royce Johnston and Bobby Johnston.
He is survived by: his friends, Ray Anding, H. T. Everritt and Ronnie Massey; his wife Helen R. Johnston; his sons, Dr. Charles R. "Chuck" Johnston (Melinda) and Todd L. Johnston (Paula); his grandchildren, Chad Johnston (Nicole), Molly Johnston Koonce (Klay) and Tony Johnston; his great grandchildren, Ellie Koonce, Kynlee Koonce, Maebry Koonce, Charlie Johnston and Erin Johnston; and his sister Mary Nielson. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
