He was predeceased by: his parents, James Polk and Eva Mae Myers Simmons; his wife Eugenia Robinson Simmons; his brother Nathan Simmons (Charlotte); his brother-in-law Bruce McCool; and his sister Brenda Dawn.

He is survived by: his daughter Tanya Simmons Ladner; his grandchildren, Brandon, Dillon Henderson and Cheyenne Andre; and his siblings, Steve Simmons (Laurie), Hilda Alexander (Laymon), Carol Simmons, Beverly McCool, Gloria Clark and Sandra Culwell (Jerry).
