He is survived by: his spouses, Nanci Fryer and Sybil Shumate; his children, David Shumate (Janelle), Elizabeth Shumate and Deborah Shumate; his stepchildren, Byron Duke and Bryan Duke (Karen); his brothers, Marvin Shumate and Donald Ray Shumate; his grandchildren, Courtney Hebert (Jason), Destiny Grant, Taylor Shumate, Sydnee Shumate, Miles Jackson and David Shumate Jr.; and his great grandchildren, Kaiden Hebret and Jaxson Hebret. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other relatives.
