He was predeceased by: his parents, Melton James, Sr. and Flora Mae Espree James; and his siblings, Hayward James, Joseph Felton James, Edward James, Sr., Earline Leday and Leona James.
He is survived by: his children, Sherman James (Nancy) of Lafayette, LA and Nicole Manuel (Travis) of Lawtell, LA; and his sisters, Shirley James of Opelousas, LA and Barbara Collins of Slidell, LA. He is also survived by extended family members and friends.
