He was predeceased by: his parents, Junius Thompson and Bertha Sam Thompson; his brother George A. Thompson; his nephew Joseph Jermaine Human; and his siblings-in-law, Alton Human, Edward Reed, Lawrence Reed, Sr., Paul James Reed, Sr., Rose Reed Davis and Edna Mae Reed Barnaba.
He is survived by: his children, Joseph Alvin Thompson, Jr., Melissa Ann Thompson Jenkins (Vincent), Scotty Anthony Thompson and Lamar Burks; his sisters, Elvina T. Dean (John), Ida T. Human and Rose T. Wiltz (Preston); and his close friend Rosie Lee Burks. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.
